Choosing raw food for your cat
Cats are carnivores, and many owners find raw meat the simplest way to feed them. Most rotate a few proteins rather than relying on one. These are the five we suggest for cats:
- Fussy Mix: veal and chicken with liver and offal. A favourite with cats, and often the one fussy eaters accept first.
- Veal Mince: 100% NZ veal, a single protein. Veal is young beef, so skip it if your cat can’t have beef.
- Chicken Mince: 100% NZ chicken, minced with the bone.
- Goat Mince: 100% NZ goat, a protein many cats haven’t tried.
- Lamb & Heart Rolls: NZ lamb and lamb heart in 1.8 kg rolls, ten to a carton. Heart is a natural source of taurine, which cats need from their food.
As a rule of thumb, raw feeders aim for about 80% muscle meat, 10% bone and 10% organ, the same guide our calculator uses. If your cat has a health condition, check with your vet before changing their food.
Raw cat food: common questions
How much raw food does a cat eat?
Adult cats usually eat about 3% of their body weight a day, so a 4 kg cat eats around 120 g. Our raw food calculator works it out for your cat.
How long does a 10 kg carton last?
At about 120 g a day, one 10 kg carton feeds a 4 kg cat for around 12 weeks. Keep it in the freezer and thaw only what you need, in the fridge.
How do I switch my cat to raw food?
Go slowly. Mix a little raw food into their usual food and increase it over a week or two. Cats can be wary of anything new, so Fussy Mix is a good place to start. Our guide to feeding cats raw meat has a step-by-step plan.
Can my dog and cat eat the same food?
Yes. All five suit dogs too, so one order can feed the whole household.
Do you deliver raw cat food to my area?
We deliver to your door across Auckland and Waikato each week. Check your address to see your delivery day.
